Vega student receives top honour at local Portfolio Night

Following on from a highly successful Portfolio Night where their students were awarded for the outstanding work, Vega School of Brand Leadership (Vega), a brand of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), has even more reason to celebrate. One of their third year students, Katlego Phatlane, from Vega Pretoria, won tops honours on the evening and is off to showcase his work in New York.

One attendee from each Portfolio Night city is selected as an All-Star and then flown to New York in August 2014 to compete in the Portfolio Night All-Stars creative challenge. The week-long event will see the All-Stars working on a real brief from a real client, while being mentored and coached by members of the advertising community.

"I am beyond excited at this recognition. Portfolio Night has truly been a life changing experience for me. I attended the event, not really knowing what to expect and I was greeted with a young designer's dream - a stage to showcase my work to the best in the business, and now I get to take my talent and share it on an international stage," shared Phatlane.

The portfolio submitted was Phatlane's final second year portfolio for the visual communication specialisation. Phatlane considers himself to be a Brand Kreator, a master of the elements as he calls it. He says that Kreator is a skill based visual communicator whose brand mantra “the science of design” is a comment on his technical ability and software proficiency, which sees his portfolio filled with eye catching visuals and also made for some very positive reviews on the evening.

Portfolio Night is an annual event hosted by McCann, where students from various tertiary institutions in South Africa are invited to present their design work to a formal panel of creative directors from some of the country's well-known advertising companies. Throughout the evening's event, each creative director was asked to keep an eye out for attendees who stood out from the crowd, and who could best represent their city on a global stage.

"We are extremely proud of Katlego and have no doubt that he is going to carry the Vega name in very high-esteem when he heads to New York in August. We wish him all the best for his trip and we look forward to seeing the work he does on that campaign,” concludes Dr Carla Enslin, co-founder of Vega.
