Field Guide - a marketer for the environment

Knowing the lay of the land is just one part of this career. It is a career based on knowledge mixed with respecting the natural environment around an individual. Also known as a Nature or Safari guide. It takes at least 55 days to obtain a level 1 qualification on a course – but this is only the legal starting point for this career.

In terms of the FGASA an individual can work in Game Reserves and lodges in Southern Africa. The FGASA qualification is also valid in Dubai, US or the UK. It is also a great qualification to have in addition to a degree or qualification in nature conservation. Many lodge managers have been guides before.

Geologist

To most people rocks are strange and arbitrary things. However, as a Geologist you will see them in a completely different light. Geology is the science and history of the earth’s crust and the layers of which it is composed. By examining rocks and strata layers you will be able to understand the physical history of the area and what changes have occurred over millions of years. Individuals generally required a solid set of marks for Math’s and Science and have an interest in Geography.

As a Journalist you will be expected to write interesting and topical stories that will educate and inform your audience. Journalists need to be professional in their approach to reporting and must operate within a strict set of rules and ethics. You will be able to choose between working in broadcasting (television and radio) or print journalism (magazines and newspapers.)
