Q: How long do I have to study to get a qualification as an optometrist and where can I do these courses?
A: Firstly, you will have to study for four years to become a qualified optometrist. Many universities and technikon, or universities of technology, around the country offer a qualification in Optometry. This degree usually falls in the ‘Faculty of Health Sciences’ or ‘School of Allied Health Professions’ depending on the institution. We recommend that you browse through the Higher Education page on the FirstStep website to find out which institutions offer the course and which, in turn, suits your needs best.
