Where on the planet are you currently located: Johannesburg, South Africa
So what exactly is your job and how did you go about to achieve that career path:
Heard from a friend that CAs earn lots of money and can do anything, so quite blindly registered…..
Was quite horrified at the extent of effort that was required but persevered!
I now work as a professional manager in the Standards Department of the IRBA.
What’s a typical working day for you:
There is no typical day! Generally the work relates to setting auditing standards and assisting auditors. Many meetings, a lot of writing e.g. reports, letters, emails. A lot of research into standards set by overseas bodies. Constant interaction with people who are specialists in their field.
All jobs have challenges, what would you say are some of yours:
Huge workload, meetings are sometimes time consuming, but everyone’s opinion needs to be heard!
Where do you see yourself in five years time:
No idea – each day is different, I take each day as it comes. (FirstStep.me says: Nice!)
Do you believe in studying as a key to success in all careers:
No, study is not the most important thing. The right attitude is. I have a sister who just has a matric and earns nearly as much as I do. She is employed by one of the most senior and respected IT people in SA. He says she is the best employee he has ever had. Her secret? A brain which she knows how to use (this helps), DETERMINATION, perseverance, hard HARD working, initiative, an enquiring mind. Most of all, she does not give up when presented with a problem and ALWAYS finds a solution. If you are also a CA with this mindset, there is no end to what you can achieve. The theoretical background (studies) is critical, but if you don’t have the right work ethic, the knowledge you have does not have much value. (FirstStep.me says: brilliantly put!)
Do you have any career role models that helped motivate your success:
Not really – I have a lot of internal ambition and drive. I learnt from everyone I have worked with (in some cases what NOT to do)
Highlights of your career so far:
Passing both CA exams first time. Being highly recognised by my employers – promotions galore, bonuses galore! And ever day – having a say and influence in my field.
Funniest moment of your career so far:
My audit manager later became my boyfriend – in a reference letter he wrote that I was excellent at forming strong team relationships and he wouldn’t hesitate to work with me again. (FirstStep.me raises eyebrows!)
Okay serious questions over:
If you weren’t a CA and RA (registered auditor) you would be an archaeologist. (FirstStep.me says like Lara Croft!)
How many countries have you travelled through in the last 5 years: 3
What is your favourite movie, website and book:
Movie: The Twilight Saga
Website: Google search engine without a doubt. I also use Facebook a lot.
Book: Too many to list – I read everything I can lay my hands on.
If you could live on and have your very own planet what would you name it:
I have no idea!!! Probably something like “Bite Me”. (FirstStep.me says: Charming!)
Do you have any role models past and present who inspire you:
Not really – I have a strong sense of what I want to accomplish.
What message do you have for the youth of the world:
Stop making excuses and just do it.
