The National Sea-and-Sand Institute came to being in 1971 in Hermanus in the South Western Cape.
The main aim was to train the youth as life-guards to do duty on the country’s beaches. Since then more than 10 000 students qualified successfully as life-savers who have been involved in some 15 000 recorded rescue operations. In the past December holiday season alone Sea-and-Sand life-guards on 18 Overstrand beaches rescued 274 bathers in trouble.

What is Spirit of Adventure?
Spirit of Adventure is an outdoor leadership centre based just outside Hillcrest at Shongweni Dam. By combining challenge and adventure with a strong focus on leadership training Spirit of Adventure encourages individuals to go beyond their perceived limits and accomplish much more than they ever imagined. Our activities include kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, rafting, orienteering, obstacle courses and much more. Since 1994, we have worked with groups from schools, universities and other organizations on courses at this Reserve, the Drakensberg, the beach and other venues and we have become known for our spirit of excellence and professionalism.
