University of the People
 
Founded in 2009, the University is based on the principles of e-learning and peer-to-peer learning, coupled with open-source technology and open educational resources. UoPeople has partnered with Yale University for research, New York University to accept students and Hewlett-Packard, as part of their Catalyst Initiative, for internships. To date, more than 1500 students from 136 countries have been admitted. The organisation has gained the widespread support of leading academics including Oxford Vice-Chancellor Sir Colin Lucas and New York University President John Sexton, among others, whom serve on the university's Presidents' Council.

Today, 30% of UoPeople's students are in Africa, and the organisation is currently expanding in the region through student outreach. One of the benefits of UoPeople’s model is that the materials do not have audio or video, as do other online higher education courses. This means that students of UoPeople do not need access to a broadband internet connection, something that many in Africa lack. All of the University’s courses are easily accessible through the connection found at a local internet cafe.
 
This university is changing not just the lives of individuals, but entire communities as well. UoPeople's unique model can and will help reverse ‘brain drain’ in Africa. Instead of intellectual and creative young adults leaving their homes to further their education, they can stay locally and use their education to help develop the communities and cities from which they originate. UoPeople’s model is also of a particular advantage for women, who can continue their education without leaving their homes or families.
